Lower-Literacy
Users
Lower-literacy users of the Internet exhibit very different reading behaviors than higher-literacy
users of online resources. They plow text rather than scan it and they miss page elements due to a
narrower field of view. Understanding how many adult learners read online content can help practitioners
offer their students tips and strategies for reading. It also can help content developers create online
resources that lower-literacy users will be more apt to read successfully. (6/23/05)

Research
in Action: Teachers, Projects, and Technology
This article discusses how teachers are increasingly pressured to use methods based on the latest
scientific research but are burdened by having to base programs and teaching on accepted research if
they receive federal funds. The author argues that teachers must look at alternative studies to guide
their practices, such as looking critically at field experience and available research and selecting
studies that reflect what is known about language and literacy development. The article then presents
a case study of a program in Socorro on the Texas-Mexico border, where an adult literacy program utilizes
technology resources based on what the author considers the best available research for adult learners in
family literacy programs who are new to English. (12/15/04)
